James Callis talks to IGN about his new role on Eureka

IGN TV: What can we expect from Dr. Grant?

James Callis: Expect the unexpected, I would say. He's not like anyone I've played before. And who knows if I'll play someone like him again. In fact, you've never met somebody like Dr. Grant before.

IGN: He's returned to Eureka, having lived there before. What kind of baggage is he bringing with him?

Callis: He definitely comes with a past. Indeed. But meets Allison and Allison has now become his present and his future, if I can put it that way. Or at least he'd like her to be. And so they're slowly moving toward that "end." But, he's a former resident of the town and the town isn't quite how he remembers it or pictures it. Everybody's slightly different and there's this weird guy who's the sheriff now and Grant wonders, "Is this guy really the sheriff?"

Things have changed slightly, in the sense that when Grant was living there years before, things weren't necessarily so metro-sexual. People weren't free and easy with each other. The sheriff wasn't cool with everything. I imagine in my own mind that Grant imagines that there should be a slightly more hard-nose law-guy running things. Grant is not someone to be messed with. He's got his own ideas and he's not a push-over.

James Callis Reveals his Eureka Gig!

Scifi Wire recently spoke to James Callis, and he talked about his time on Battlestar Galactica and joining the cast of Eureka.

James Callis Interview with Zap2It

"I was looking very rough," he tells Zap2it. "They wanted me to be English, originally."

That, though, didn't make sense to Callis: "This guy in 'FlashForward,' he's been abducted from an early age and put in some weird scientific flash-forward think tank -- was he on holiday from Skegness?"

(FYI, Skegness is a seaside town in Lincolnshire, England.)

"I just ... didn't buy the idea of Gabriel McDow being a young 15-year-old, being on holiday in America and being abducted from his parents," he says. "You know what, it's an American story. It's set in Los Angeles."

Perhaps as a result of his experiences, McDow is mentally and emotionally disturbed, albeit still brilliant. His fashion sense has definitely suffered as well.

"I was a very different kind of character," Callis says. "I was very protected by the glasses and the baseball cap and whatever it was. Initially they said, 'It's just you, wearing a mac, and we love the way you talk.' I'm like, 'That's going to seem so odd.'

"I've seen videos of Kim Peek, the guy who 'Rain Man' was based on. He's the original savant. These people, they're truly brilliant, but they're slightly askance".

James Callis joins Eureka cast

“Battlestar Galactica” veterans continue to pick up new gigs. Now fan favorite James Callis (“Dr. Gaius Baltar”) has joined the cast of Syfy’s “Eureka.”

Callis will appear during the show’s upcoming fourth-season as Dr. Grant, a former resident of the town whose return is a cause for alarm. His character will have a romantic interest in Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield), which causes friction with Sherriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson).

Since “Battlestar” concluded last year, Callis has landed a guest role on CBS’ “Numbers” and is set to appear ABC’s “FlashForward” while former “Battlestar” co-star Katee Sackhoff is currently appearing on Fox’s “24” and Grace Park has been tapped for CBS’ “Hawaii Five-O” remake.

Production begins this week on “Eureka” in Vancouver and the show is set to return July 9. Last season was the most-watched yet for the series, averaging 3.2 million viewers including DVR use and 1.4 million adults 18-49.

FlashForward - James Callis Character Details

The news of James Callis being cast in Flashforward has peaked my interest in the show again.  In my opinion it had become rather bland to the extent I forgot it was on.  Here is some info on James' character.

The Science Fiction fandom has been abuzz since ABC announced that James Callis had been cast in a pivotal role on FlashForward.  Callis’s performance as Gaius Baltar on Battlestar Galactica was legendary, Baltar was multi-faceted – playboy, scoundrel, traitor, religious leader, and surprisingly, hero – and much to Callis’s credit, every angle of Gaius was believable as individual shades of one morally complex individual.  Following up a character like Balater wouldn’t be easy, but from what I learned today Callis may have found a part on FlashForward that makes for a suitable encore.

While speaking with FlashForward cast members Jack Davenport, Sonya Walger, Joseph Fiennes, and Dominic Monaghan today, I got a few unexpected bits of info about that nature of Callis’s character – who I have since confirmed is named Gabriel McDow –  that turned out to be intriguing to say the least.  The first bit came when I asked Walger about how the ‘Many Worlds’ concept might mate with the knowledge in the FlashForward universe that the visions are not destiny.

“Olivia meets this strange character who seems to know an enormous amount about her future, and is very definitive about what he knows – he’s played by James Callis, who was in Battlestar Galactica amongst other things – and the reason he knows so much about Olivia’s future is that it turns out he has had multiple flash-forwards.   So he becomes integral to her believing and subscribing  to the idea that there is an alternative, that there was another path that she might have gone on. He also becomes of huge importance to the FBI investigation.” Walger told me.

Look who's FlashForward-ing: James Callis!

Battlestar Galactica's James Callis is FlashForwarding to ABC to make some trouble. He  has been cast in a major role on FlashForward for several episodes at the end of the season, said co-show runner Jessika Borsiczky in an exclusive interview with SCI FI Wire.

"When I watched Battlestar, every time he wasn't in a scene I couldn't wait for him to come back," said Borsiczky. "And I really wanted to have an opportunity to work with him. Honestly, since the show was ordered, we've been excited to work with him. And I so just cast him in our show. He's playing a big role in some of the final episodes this season, and it was for that very reason."

However, Borsiczky was coy about the exact nature of Callis' character. "I don't actually want to tell you anything about the character, because he's a really exciting, unusual character. So I think it's going to be fun for the audience. He's going to be involved with Olivia's trajectory ... some of Olivia's journey."

What Borsiczky wasn't at all coy about was the behind-the-scenes changes that have been big news as FlashForward prepares to return to ABC in March after a long hiatus. Borsiczky's husband, co-creator David Goyer, stepped down as the show's show runner just months after taking over for Marc Guggenheim, who also stepped down.

James Callis GALACTICA.TV interview

Marcel Damen recently talked to James Callis. Here are some excerpts from the interview:

At what point in your life did you decide you wanted to become an actor?

I'm not sure it was a conscious decision. I acted in school plays at a really young age. There were like town competitions for kids, set up by the local youth group or something. I was a bit of an extravert, even as a young kid. I wanted to sing a song or do something. My earliest play was when I was eight and it was this school play. Even at an early age it was so much fun doing this in class. It wasn't like doing math or anything else . The reading out... I remember, even at a young age, when someone wasn't on some level being a character or doing the lines justice, reading the lines like (in monotone voice): "Oh, come over here.", I was like: "No, no, it must be with some inflection or something." So I was already realizing that at a very early age. When I became an actor much later, for a long time I felt I was just a performer. I wasn't sure they were the same thing.

Can you pinpoint one moment when you decided that this is what you wanted to do for the rest of your life?

No. It's interesting, because I don't have that as well. A lot of things interest me. Acting is only one of my many interests.

Okay. I've read your parents own and run a bed and breakfast? What did they say when you told them that you wanted to become an actor?

Very supportive. My parents wanted all of us to be happy. I've also got two sisters and they said to all of us: "Do what you want to do." I love how people are worried in the way you ask that question: "Oh dear, your son wants to become an actor. What are you going to do?" but they never had that. I think my mother had done some acting before and my grandmother was going to be an opera singer, but when my grandmother was younger it wasn't correct -- in my family -- for a young lady to be on stage. That was like a disaster. Things had changed a lot by the time I came around, so they were very supportive. I think they knew it would make me happy.
