Shit My Dad Says Fails the Test

When CBS decided to air a sitcom starring William Shatner based on the cult hit Twitter account @shitmydadsays, it decided to tweak the name to avoid causing offence. Unfortunately that’s proved a step too far for modern technology.

The network has now had to post a message on the show’s official forum urging viewers who wanted to record the show on their digital video recorders to make sure they manually selected it from their program guide.

($#*! MY DAD SAYS) has proven too much for the search functions of some DVRs that can’t read some or any of the characters in the first word. The dollar sign appears to be the main problem.

Chief research officer David Poltrack told the New York Times that the symbols were an advantage on some DVR systems because it meant the show appeared at the start of alphabetical listings. That may be true, but I find it hard to imagine many people pick which shows to record by working their way through from A to Z.

Shit My Dad Says - Episode 1.01 - Pilot - Press Release

EMMY WINNER WILLIAM SHATNER, JONATHAN SADOWSKI, NICOLE SULLIVAN AND WILL SASSO STAR IN "$#*! MY DAD SAYS," A NEW COMEDY PREMIERING THURSDAY, SEPT. 23

"Pilot" - After being laid off from his job writing for a men's magazine, Henry moves in with his cranky, outspoken father, Ed, on $#*! MY DAD SAYS, a new comedy premiering Thursday, Sept. 23 (8:31-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

$#*! MY DAD SAYS (pronounced "Bleep My Dad Says"), based on the popular Twitter feed by Justin Halpern, is a comedy about Ed Goodson as a forthright and opinionated dad who relishes expressing his unsolicited and often wildly politically incorrect observations to anyone within earshot. Nobody is safe from Ed's rants, including his sons, Henry, a struggling writer-turned-unpaid blogger; and Vince, the meek half of a husband/wife real estate duo with domineering Bonnie. When Henry finds he can no longer afford to pay rent, Ed reveals a soft spot and invites Henry to move in with him. Henry agrees, knowing that the verbal assault will not abate and now there will be no escape. Describing their father/son relationship is tricky, but Ed will easily come up with a few choice words.

Shatner Talks Shit My Dad Says

I wish [CBS] would call it ‘sh*t’ (clapping). What’s wrong with —you know, you say to your — I’ve got grandchildren. I brought up three girls. They’ve all got kids. Okay? And you say ‘Boopy doo-doo, you’ve got to make poo-poo. Come on. Make poo-poo in the toilet.’ Eventually, ‘poo-poo’ becomes ‘sh*t.’ ‘Go take a sh*t, and you’ll feel better.’ You say that to your kids. The word ‘sh*t’ is around us. It isn’t a terrible term. It’s a natural function. Why are we pussyfooting?
Bill also talked about how he has embraced the Twitter phenomenon (with some help)

Is [the character limit] 148? No wonder they won’t print my — but I don’t Twitter. I can’t even remember my password name. So I have problems with electronics. So what I’ve done is I’ve hired a young man out of college — whose very fingers are the extension of computer keys — and he Twitters. He does the mechanics, but I very carefully modulate what I say and have used Twitter to publicize stuff, to have conversations, instigate competition. It’s been an exploration in the immediate language of being short-termed and pithy, and I have had a growing and glowing experience with Twitter.
