The Taranis, a high-tech unmanned stealth jet, was announced yesterday by U.K. defense firm BAE Systems—which we hope won't bring us one step closer to having to flee Earth while being hunted by Cylons.

The Taranis was named after the Celtic god of thunder (because if they'd named it after Thor, the Norse god of thunder, Marvel would have sicced its lawyers on them, we guess). It's around the size of a Hawk jet and is equipped with an "autonomous" artificial intelligence system.

Test flights for the Taranis—which is almost invisible to ground radar, designed to travel at high jet speeds and capable of carrying bombs and missiles—are due to start in 2011, the Daily Mail reported.

Let's mark this date, when the first real-life precursor to the Cylons that will destroy humanity first took shape in the form of a robot astronaut created by NASA and ... General Motors.

Both humans and robots have explored the final frontier, but for the first time a human-like robot is going to be sent into space to aid the astronauts on the International Space Station.

Known as Robonaut 2 (or, endearingly, R2), the two-armed 'bot is the result of a venture by NASA and General Motors and will help the researchers involved identify in what ways a robot could be a help to human explorers in space. Before it gets to go on its first spacewalk, however, it'll be monitored to see how well it deals with weightlessness.
