Review: Latest 'Battlestar' Album Release A Worthy Companion

Bear McCreary puts out what could be his final album based on the acclaimed series

As of Feb. 23, BSG fanatics can now pick up a yet another album from composer Bear McCreary. However, rather than featuring music from the series, this latest release combines selections from the television films “Razor” and “The Plan.”

BSG fans know that McCreary is a gifted composer, and here he delivers a dazzling amalgamation of strings and percussion that punctuates the drama and mystery of both the series and the films in which the music is featured.

Originally airing on Syfy in the fall of 2007, “Razor” tells the story of a terrifying Cylon attack from the perspective of Officer Kendra Shaw (Stephanie Jacobsen). Meanwhile, “The Plan” –- originally released on DVD in 2009 -– examines the Cylon plot to destroy humanity, giving fans a much-anticipated peek into the inner workings of the Cylon leaders.

The album begins with the guitar riffs of “Apocalypse (Theme from ‘The Plan’),” instantly evoking the epic scale that is the trademark of BSG. It is among the album’s many standouts and nicely showcases McCreary’s ability to effortlessly infuse emotion into his music.

This Tuesday, February 23rd, La-La Land Records will release the final “canon” Battlestar Galactica soundtrack: Battlestar Galactica: The Plan and Razor. This unique compilation, representing the two straight-to-DVD scores that were left off the Season 4 soundtrack album, will complete any BSG fan’s collection.

To celebrate this, and the recent release of Dark Void’s original video game soundtrack, I’m doing a CD signing of both records this Saturday at Dark Delicacies!
