Steven Moffat talks about the new series of Doctor Who.


"The wait is almost over. The second part of the thrilling new series of Doctor Who begins on 27 August 2011.


"The rules have changed, and the game is deadlier than ever. Out in the universe, where the earthly rules of time and space do not apply, Amy and Rory know only too well that their baby daughter needs them. For Melody Pond is destined to become River Song, mysterious archaeologist and convicted murderer – the woman who killed the best man she ever knew...


"The Doctor leads Amy and Rory across centuries and galaxies in a desperate search for baby Melody, but a terrible and inescapable date looms large. At 5.02pm on 22nd April 2011, the Doctor will die. These are his last days, and the quest for Melody his final mission.


"The search will result in a crash landing in Thirties Berlin and will bring them face to face with the greatest war criminal of all time. And Hitler. Old friendships will be tested to their limits as the Doctor suffers the ultimate betrayal and learns a harsh lesson in the cruellest warfare of all.


"A distress call from a terrified little boy will break through all barriers of time and space and lead the Doctor to visit the scariest place in the Universe. George's bedroom. George is terrorised by every fear you can possibly imagine. Fears that live in his bedroom cupboard. His parents are desperate – George needs a doctor. But allaying George's fears won't be easy. Because the monsters in George's cupboard are real.


"An unscheduled visit to a quarantine facility for victims of an alien plague – a plague that will kill the Doctor in a day – leaves Amy trapped. Alone, Rory must find Amy and bring her back to the TARDIS before the faceless doctors kill her with kindness. But Rory is about to encounter a very different side to his wife.


"In an impossible hotel, the Doctor, Amy and Rory find themselves checked-in but unable to check out. Walls move, corridors twist, rooms vanish and death lies in wait for every visitor. But the Doctor's time has yet to come. He has one last stop to make on his final journey. His old friend, Craig Owens, desperately needs his help – a new and unfamiliar presence is wreaking havoc in Colchester. And then come the Cybermen. But time catches up with us all and the Doctor can delay no more.

Stephen Moffat has told Doctor Who Magazine that there is a massive, massive twist coming up in the next series of the show. And it’s all to do with Amy Pond.

Moffat declared that "The calamitous and, frankly, shocking events at the climax of episode seven will still be ringing in your ears when Doctor Who returns in the autumn for a further six episodes."

He continued, “You’ll see The Doctor’s life change forever. You will gasp at the true nature of his relationship with Amy and cry out in horror as Rory Williams stumbles to the brink of a tragic mistake.”

To reinforce the point, he added that “It is an enormous, game-changing cliffhanger for The Doctor, Amy and Rory. It’ll change everything for them.”

Doctor Who won Best Family Drama at the TV Choice Awards 2010 last night, with Karen Gillan on hand to accept the award.

Lead writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat was also there to see Doctor Who win a second major award in a week. Karen looked sensational in a scarlet red dress and black jacket and the evening was hosted by Alexander Armstrong, the voice of Mr Smith in The Sarah Jane Adventures.

The awards ceremony took place at London's Dorchester Hotel and came the day after Doctor Who won a Hugo Award in Melbourne.

Dr Who's companion Amy Pond may be killed off in the next series - in a shock mid-season twist.

Steven Moffat teased fans by saying the series will take a break at Easter with a dramatic storyline - leaving viewers "needing the summer to recover".

The Sun reported that killing off Amy is the devastating plot twist favoured by bosses.  

A source told TV Biz that Karen Gillan, who plays Amy,WILL leave before the end of the next season.  Steven Moffat yesterday promised an "enormous earth-shattering cliffhanger" halfway through the series.

Seven episodes will be shown up to Easter, followed by six in autumn.  He said the Doctor and his companion will face a "game-changing" moment.

He added: "It's a huge event. An episode of Dr Who that's not scary is failing the children of this nation."

Steven - speaking at a Dr Who masterclass in the Edinburgh television festival - was asked whether the cliffhanger is "the biggest of Dr Who in the modern era".

He replied: "It's a good one. I know word-for-word what it is."

Steven also told how he had almost not hired stunning Scot Karen for the role after seeing her in a show reel that made her look "short and dumpy".

He added: "Then I saw her in the corridor and she was so tall and beautiful. When she is in heels I feel like the sidecar to a motorbike."

When you came to plan out this series, did you have the finale in your head from the start?

"I had aspects of it. I had certain things I needed that I need to get to, and I had an overarching idea that would, and I suppose it's a better conversation to have after next week's episode. There are certain things that you'll see that have been there from the beginning. There's been quite a careful planning of things, which is pretty obvious from episode 12, that everything was set up and paid off there. There's more coming next week, in the event that anyone comes out of the Pandorica. So yeah, you have to leave yourself some space to improvise, otherwise it gets boring, otherwise you get bored with your own script, and quite a lot of episode 13, which is a mad episode, is brand new. But there are certain key points where I know I wanted 'this'. I'm thinking of the next finale right now so I can plot the rest of the series. I know what the big reveals are and the big hopefully jaw dropping moments are going to be."

So you'll be planning a similar sort of setup for the next series?

"Similar in the sense that it's an arc that doesn't get in the way too much. That's in the event if there is another series, which is all told in flashback."

Episode twelve ended with an almighty trio of cliffhangers. Can you tell us anything at all about episode 13?

"Well, there's going to be some light music and a short note of apology saying, 'The universe ended last week, we're really sorry, we don't know what you're doing here, didn't you get the message?'"

Does the series wrap things up with a neat resolve in time for the Christmas special?

"Well we blew up the universe, so it'll be a nice flashback episode at Christmas."

Will there be any kind of trailer for the Christmas special after the episode?

"After the 50 minutes of gentle music and weeping apology? Nope. The universe has ended."

Will you at least reveal the title?

"There will be a Christmas special - well, a flashback Christmas special - but no, we won't be telling you anything, not a single thing. It's too early."

Do you know when we'll find out?

"No, I don't actually know when we'll start releasing that information. I genuinely don't! [We'll] try and work what we've normally done as with all these specials before, but there'll be some strategy that won't be mine."

Watching this series back as it's aired, have you learned any lessons about what works and what doesn't?

"I think you learn things every day, yeah. A lot of things we learn isn't necessarily artistic in a way, sometimes it's practical, it's 'That's where you spend your money, over there, not over there, over there'. A lot thinking that's wasted money. Don't use your CGI when you need a spaceship, when you use CGI somewhere make sure it blows something up. Just stuff like that. It's less artistic and more practical."

How far into planning series six are you?

"Not far enough, I think is the answer to that! I've got lots of plans - plans are not nearly as useful as scripts, I find - so I'd like to have more scripts and fewer plans. We're not quite as ahead of the game as we were last time. But it's fine."

Do you have all of your writers confirmed yet?

"We've got a fair number of them, there's one more I'm chasing, but yeah."

Do you think it's possible Russell could come back to write an episode?

"Is it possible? He's pretty adamant that he's not going to. I'm in constant touch with him. I don't know, you'd have to ask him. He did an awful lot of Doctor Who for an awful lot of years, and I think he's finding it in a way hard, because he's done a Doctor Who story in effect for Sarah Jane Adventures. So I think he possibly wants to get away from it for a bit. I can understand that, because he did a hell of a lot. But I'd love to get him, it would be just joyous to get him back because I miss him."

So it's something you'd like to see happen?

"Oh I would love it, and I said to him, "Look I want" and he said, 'Don't even ask me for series five because I'm just knackered, I just want to go lie down,' and I think I'll find out how that feels. But I did ask him for series six, and I always will."

And you definitely can't tell us anything about episode 13?

"The universe has ended, mate, he's dead. The Doctor is in the Pandorica, there's this little voice saying: 'Hello, that was a big bang wasn't it? Oh, something happened out there?'"

The title of the penultimate episode of the current series has been revealed as The Pandorica Opens and the episode will be exclusively previewed at a special screening at the Princess Anne Theatre, BAFTA on Wednesday 16 June.

There will be a special Question and Answer session with Matt Smith talking about his first season as the Doctor and Steven Moffat talking about his first season as Lead Writer. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will join the panel.
